🐢 Born from Ghost Nets – Where Science Meets Design
Every year, tens of thousands of tons of fishing nets are discarded in the ocean.
Tragically, countless marine animals lose their lives entangled in these nets.🥲
As a design brand aiming to address environmental issues, PIGLAB launched a sustainable collaboration with:
♻️ Netspa, a Korean company specializing in ghost net collection and recycling
🧪 Samyang Corporation, an advanced materials company
Together, we’ve created a meaningful product with a powerful message.

🐢 Turtle Bottle Opener, Made from Recycled Ghost Nets
One of PIGLAB’s signature products, the Turtle Bottle Opener, is a 3-in-1 tool that opens:
Glass bottle caps, Plastic bottle caps, Can lids

For this collaboration, we used recycled nylon material sourced from actual marine debris, made possible through a circular production chain:
⛴️ Netspa – collects abandoned fishing nets from Korea’s coastline
🏭Samyang Corp. – processes the nets into high-quality recycled pellets
🐢PIGLAB – transforms them into upcycled, story-driven design products

The fact that this little turtle is made from nets salvaged directly from the sea adds profound meaning to its existence.
🔬 Crossing Paths with Science – Collaboration with Samyang Corp.

In 2024, Samyang Corporation featured the Turtle Bottle Opener as a representative example of sustainable material application at the global plastics exhibition Chinaplas.
To highlight this collaboration, a custom edition was created with the Samyang logo printed on the back of the product.
It became a hands-on, tangible demonstration of how eco-materials can be transformed into practical consumer products.

📍 Featured at Samyang’s booth during Chinaplas 2024
Beyond exhibitions, this product was also introduced at the Future Science Camp hosted by the Yang Young Foundation and Samyang Group.
Used as an educational gift, the opener helped teach children about the value of waste and the power of sustainable design.

🎥 Also Featured on YouTube Channel Science View
The Turtle Opener was introduced in Episode 134 of the popular Korean science YouTube channel 과학을 보다 (Science View).
The episode, titled “What Happens When Microbes Start Decomposing Non-Biodegradable Plastics”, featured a guest from Samyang Corp., and the PIGLAB opener appeared as a real-world example.

This collaboration is a great example of how science, technology, and design can come together to solve real-world problems.
From the Ocean, for the Ocean
PIGLAB will continue to tell meaningful environmental stories
through sustainable materials and small design objects with big impact.
Small Things, Big Stories.
